Writing at Quest University Canada

As an integral feature of its curriculum, Quest asks its students to write in all courses – in the sciences as well as in the humanities. Students can find writing assistance at the Learning Commons. Writing across the curriculum helps students to:

  1. understand the material more deeply;
  2. practice writing techniques consistently and retain their skills;
  3. feel less apprehension about writing;
  4. improve their higher-order reasoning skills; and consequently
  5. write better prose.

What kind of writing do students do at Quest? In addition to traditional forms of writing such as essays, lab reports, book reviews, and expository responses to exam questions, students also engage in a variety of shorter writing assignments in their classes. These may include journals, exit summaries, problem analyses, and peer dialogues. Because we want students to interrogate the world, we pay special attention to the conceptualization and expression of questions. Students practice this questioning in their electronic portfolios.
