A Student Perspective: Sam Edney

My name is Sam Edney and I was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta and have been member of the National Luge Team for 7 years. I am currently in my first year at Quest University Canada, which is a new university that has opened up in Squamish, BC. I was also a former student at the National Sport School in Calgary from 1999 to 2002, which was very important in allowing me to complete my high school courses while also accommodating both my training and travel schedules as a member of the National Luge team.

The opportunity to focus on sport through my high school years allowed me the honor to compete in the 2006 Winter Olympics for Canada. This was such an exciting experience and has fueled my motivation towards being on the podium in the Olympics in the 2010 Games.

Quest University Canada greatly excites me, as it is the first Canadian University that offers a style of learning ( the Block Program) that is also very well suited to my continued involvement on the National Luge Team. It allows me to pursue my goal of competing at the Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver/Whistler 2010, while also allowing me to pursue post-secondary classes in such an exciting and unique setting. Quest has attracted such an exciting and unique group of students and faculty. The block plan, amazing faculty, and the location being in Squamish, makes Quest University Canada a huge factor in helping me achieve my goals in sport and academically. Quest University Canada has really stepped up and allowed me the freedom to attend blocks when it works for me. This is going to be critical for me in the next two years as my training and competitive schedule intensifies as the Olympics creep closer.

Each athlete has their own unique schedule and demands for their individual sports, and Quest gives the opportunity to focus on sport because you are not overwhelmed with several classes at once. The balance of training and school is that much easier with the block program. Quest University Canada will continue to attract student/athletes not only for its amazingly great and unique program, but I think that athletes will strive in their sport as well as academics.
